Straightaway: The player who has chosen to test the back tees at Mesa Verde will wonder why he did when he steps on this tee. A well-played tee shot must negotiate a tree-lined chute for the first 100 yards and is best played to the right-hand side of the fairway. The player whose tee shot ends up left may think he or she is in the Black Forest. A thick stand of Monterey pines almost guarantees that the second shot be punched back to the fairway. For those that do hit the fairway, there is still more work to do. The fairway is tree-lined for its entire length and is narrow. Many players choose to play a long iron for their second shots as the green is not reachable in two by most.
